Recent findings are rapidly expanding our understanding of a new class of brain cells -- mirror neurons. Some scientists speculate that a mirror system in people's brains forms the basis for social behavior, for our ability to imitate, acquire language, and show empathy and understanding. It also may have played a role in the evolution of speech. Shahin will present an overview of the functional properties of the mirror system as well as a very brief historical look at the discovery of this marvellous system. After discussing the role of mirror neurons in understanding action and imitation, he will end the presentation with an examination of the link between the mirror system and some arguably unique human domains, such as language and culture.

THE ROOSTER is Hossein's last short film which he finished December 2007 and he is sending it to some film festivals now. The story is about a man who is lonely and he is just talking to a cockroach to free his loneliness. He is going out to talk with a girl who came to his apartment by a mistake but He couldn’t talk to her. He goes to the street and reviews his opinion about society, people, love and the future.

The first version is 20 minute long take shot which was very difficult to arrange it because the camera starts from the bathtub and fallowing him with all his actions in inside and outside.

One of his goals in this film is what his character says:

" I’m showing you this movie so that at least in my fantasy I would for once be number one. I thought to myself I would tell my story in two perspectives; the long take and the edited version to see if Andre Bazin was right or Pudovkin and Eisenstein. Do you think our life is based on a long take or is just a series of cuts? When we sleep at night couldn’t that just be a big cut? And people, do we see them as a long take or in cuts? I think that when people get tired of life they create the cut ".

Khosro Behramandi, a Montreal based Iranian artist, currently has an exhibition at MEKIC, the Maison d'Edition Ketabe Iran Canada. The show, titled Re-emerge (Baz peydayesh), is the culmination of a year's worth of work described by Olga Pudelco of MEKIC as "a veritable therapy of simplicity for all those who dream." The vernissage took place October 3, 2008 and will remain on display until November 16, 2008.

Khosro's formal language has grown over the last twenty years. It is a self generated style based on an extremely refined linear depiction with fantastic detail and complex dimensions that translates his imagination into a figurative narration.

According to The International Ecotourism Society, beginning in 1990s, ecotourism has been growing 20% - 34% per year in the world. In 2004, ecotourism and nature tourism were growing globally three times faster than the tourism industry as a whole. This new industry has also affected Iran and made government and private businesses to take advantage of this opportunity. Because of climate variety and considerable biodiversity, Iran has a good potential for ecotourism development; however, since the main challenge of ecotourism is its sustainability there is a fear among people who are trying to conserve Iran's nature about possible negative impacts of ecotourism on Iran's environment if it is executed without complete respect to accepted principles and policies. If conducted in a true way, ecotourism can be a powerful tool to save small communities cultures, shrinking ecosystems and their wildlife.

This session 9/11 we will talk about the 11th September attacks of 2001 , its roots and consequences.
We try to cover most of the aspects of this attacks by several talks (Eaxh around 10-20 min.) and a movie.

Kianoosh Hashemzadeh, will start the session.Her talk will include an overview of the chain-of-events of 9/11,
followed by a brief summary of "conspiracy" theories which offer different ides of how this event "actually" happened.

Mona Tajali, will talk about the terrorism in the Middle East and looked at the causes that the youth joins such fundamentalist groups, and their links to the Wahhabi School of thought, and the fact that most members are born and raised in the West.

Roksana Bahramitash,PhD ,will talk about the consequences of this attacks.She is going to be discussing her paper:
The War on Terror, Feminist Orientalism and Orientalist Feminism: Case Studies of Two North American Bestsellers,"Critique: Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Vol.14, No 2, 223-237, Summer 2005. Her paper focuses on how, due (in part) to the environment created post-9/11, Muslim women have been portrayed in problematic ways. She looks at two American bestsellers: Reading Lolita in Tehran and Nine Parts of Desire.

At the end we will watch a short Movie about 9/11 and coninue the session with discussions.

“Postmodern literature” is an interesting field of the contemporary literature which contains an attractive frency for the auhors and readers of the texts eluding from the structuralist approach.
